FIPF Panel
On September 15th 2018 I realised a long-held ambition when I was awarded a Fellowship Distinction by the Irish Photographic Federation with these 20 images. This is the statement that accompanied the panel:
Lives Interrupted
On April 27th 1986, 36 hours after Reactor Number Four at the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant had exploded and begun emitting hither-to unheard-of levels of radiation, the 43,000 residents of Pripyat were evacuated ……. never to return.
Today, 32 years later, the remnants of these interrupted lives can be seen all over the city.
Also, very much in evidence, are the changed interiors – altered by the passage of time and by so many photographers.
These photographs have been taken in the abandoned schools around Pripyat where I found the story to be most poignant. The scenes have been photographed exactly as I found them.
